The Hockeyroos put on a dazzling second half to headline the first day of the International Super Series Hockey 9s in Perth. After leading 1-0 at half-time, the Australian women poured on seven second half goals to stun Malaysia 8-0.

Home crowd favorite Ashleigh Nelson netted a hat-trick as the Hockeyroos produced an irresistible ten minute burst that saw Jayde Taylor, Madonna Blyth, Brooke Peris, Casey Eastham and Claire Messent all score.

Argentina’s men dulled the Kookaburras opening salvo to share the spoils 4-all in an entertaining men’s affair. The match had it all with seven different goal scorers in the first half before committed defence, especially from Argentine goalkeeper Juan Vivaldi, shone in the second half.

The Australian men blitzed Argentina in an early barrage through Eddie Ockenden, Simon Orchard, Daniel Beale and Russell Ford. The Argentines closed to within 4-3 on the stroke of half-time with a penalty corner to Matias Paredes and then immediately after the break, an own goal set up the contest for a grand finish with thrills, spills and near misses.

Argentina’s women opened the International Super Series in fine style defeating Canada 4-1. Captain Luciana Aymar and Agustina Albertarrio were damaging throughout for Las Leonas scoring once in each half to demonstrate that they will be extremely tough to beat this week.

Canada rocked the crowd by dancing into Perth Hockey Stadium, embracing the Hockey 9s spirit before Aymar and Albertarrio put on a show of their own with reverse-stick goals in the first half and goals within a minute of each other in the second stanza to break out from their 2-1 half time advantage.

Pakistan are top of the men’s standings at the end of day one after securing a 5-3 victory in the last match against Malaysia. The Malaysians scored the quickest goal of the tournament through Nabil Fiqri in the first minute but the Green Shirts grabbed the lead in the 16th minute and didn’t relinquish it.

The 2-1 half-time Pakistan lead was made to stand as Muhammad Dilber scored twice, both in the last five minutes, to go with earlier efforts from Muhammad Arslan Qadir, Muhammad Umar Bhutta and Muhammad Salman Hussain.

Day two gets underway at 5:30pm AWST on Friday. The Kookaburras take on Malaysia in the men’s pool while Australia’s Hockeyroos face Canada’s women. Tickets are available on the gate.
